🌙 Ramadan in Morocco – What to Know & Expect

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam. During this time, Muslims fast daily from sunrise to sunset. Abstaining from food, drink (including water) & smoking.
It is a month focused on prayer, self-discipline, generosity & community connection.

Whether you’re living in Morocco or visiting during this period, here’s a gentle guide to help you navigate it respectfully.

🕰 What Changes During Ramadan?

Daily Rhythm Shifts

  • Days are generally quieter and slower paced where as Evenings become lively & social after sunset.

  • Some cafés & restaurants may be closed during daylight hours (some tourist areas remain open).

  • Businesses may operate reduced or adjusted hours.

  • More food vendor pop ups will be available (a great oppertunity to try homemade traditions & get freshly squeezed orange juice!)

Iftar (Breaking the Fast)

  • At sunset, families gather for iftar, the meal that breaks the fast.

  • Streets may empty just before sunset then come alive afterwards.

Night Energy

  • After iftar, Tamraght feels more vibrant.

  • Markets, bakeries & cafés may open later

  • Many people stay up late, especially for special evening prayers.

🤍 Being Mindful & Respectful

You are absolutely allowed to eat & drink if you are not fasting as this can supports the local businesses

Helpful etiquette:

  • Dress modestly in the town. At the beach is still ok.

  • Be patient, people may be lower in energy before sunset.

  • Greet people with “Ramadan Mubarak” (Happy Ramadan) if you’d like.

Remember: locals understand that visitors may not be fasting. A little sensitivity is appreciated, not perfection.

🌅 The Beauty of Ramadan

Ramadan in Morocco is also incredibly special to witness:

  • Community iftars & shared meals

  • Extra generosity & charity

  • A peaceful, reflective atmosphere by day

  • Magical social evenings

It is less about restriction & more about connection to faith, family & community.
